How To Treat A Prolapsed Hemorrhoid

A prolapsed hemorrhoid is an internal hemorrhoid that is so distended that it protrudes from the anus.  Pleasant huh?  The good news is that many prolapsed hemorrhoids are not particularly painful, but rather just annoying.

There are different degrees of prolapsed hemorrhoids and they vary in severity.

Grades of internal hemorrhoids (prolapsed hemorrhoid symptoms)

Grade #1:  Not prolapsed at all

Grade #2: Hemorrhoid prolapses upon defecation and spontaneously reduces back.

Grade #3: Hemorrhoid prolapses upon defecation, but must be manually put back.

Grade #4: Hemorrhoid prolapses upon defecation and can’t be reduced.

As you can see the higher the grade of the prolapsed hemorrhoid, the more painful and difficult it becomes.

Prolapsed hemorrhoid treatment:

The easiest way to treat an external prolapsed hemorrhoid that doesn’t retract on its own is to manually push the hemorrhoid back inside the rectum.   If the hemorrhoid cannot be pushed into the rectum and if it becomes very painful you should see a doctor.  You should always also see a doctor at the onset of any hemorrhoid symptoms to rule out other diseases that present similarly.

There are many ways to treat hemorrhoids at home that are very effective.   One of the most important things you can do for internal prolapsed hemorrhoids is to allow your body to heal by preventing the cause of the hemorrhoid.  This can be done by encouraging regular unconstipated bowel movements.  The easiest way to do this is to eat a diet that is high in fiber.  Fiber rich foods include fruit, vegetables, beans, and whole grains.   Fiber keeps your fecal matter from becoming hard and allows you to have easier bowel movements which helps to allow your hemorrhoids to heal on their own.

If you eat a diet that is low in fiber currently, you will want to add fiber gradually until you get to 20 to 25 grams per day.   By building up gradually you will avoid getting a lot of gas or having diarrhea which can make your hemorrhoids worse.   Something I have personally found that really helps with my regularity (and helps to prevent flare ups of my hemorrhoids) is to take 1 teaspoon of Cod Liver Oil a day.

Some of the other things you can do to treat prolapsed hemorrhoids is to use a cream (for external ones) or a suppository (for internal ones) that has a vasoconstrictor and an analgesic or pain killer.   These products (like Preperation H and Tucks) can give you serious and immediate relief.

Finally, if your prolapsed hemorrhoids are distended you may find that applying a cold compress can be very helpful in making them feel better.
